In our reality the human mind is constantly bombarded with imagery, decision-making, and the stresses of day-to-day life. It is precisely these memories, thoughts, and experiences that are the basis of my work. I am interested not in the realistic representation of these entities, but in exploring how the mind deciphers and reassign meaning in an abstract manner. Through the process of meditation the conscious and subconscious mind take away the normal context of thoughts and experiences – fragmenting them to create new environments and entities for the imagination to explore.
Automatic drawing serves as my meditative process. It allows me to focus on the basic elements of mark making, tonal quality, and composition rather than focusing on the outcome of the final piece. Using my intuition, each mark suggests the placement of the next through constant reevaluation of the entire composition. Drawing and printmaking are my primary mediums, and I am strongly connected to their physical traits, which have a similar methodical process of meditation. Upon completion of a drawing or print the second meditative process begins – contemplation. Marks begin to take on symbolic characteristics of the natural and unnatural world in which I decipher for myself and discover the meaning and title for a piece of work.
This body of work has grown out of my graduate school studies while living in Las Cruces, New Mexico and focuses on the transcendental aspects of nature and spirituality. Since I have returned to the Mid-West, my work has become an exploration for understanding the mind, how symbols collide together within a piece of work while providing answers to questions and thoughts. This process of creating holds endless possibilities as a means of my personal expression to the environments in which I inhabit.

I love the abstract quality of this piece yet I still get a sense of depth which makes me search deep into this image. The thick black likes outline everything nicely and I love let the medium take over on the splotches.
This is fascinating to look at, I wonder where everything came from.. why your mind wanted you to make those marks. It is beautiful and interesting.
Stunning work of art. When I first saw it I thought Kandinsky. It has that same abstracted and colorful quality but no matter how long I look at it I seem to find something I'd missed before. It reminds me of going through a normal day. There is always so much going on and if you look hard enough, you can find countless beautiful people, things, and mometns throughout the day.
I love how your brain works. Abstract art always pulls me in. Your mind is forced to figure out the details on its own; it's forced to think. We could use more of that everyday.
You are very clear and articulate in describing your process. I have utilized a process very much like you are describing. However, I have turned the other way and want the experience to give me the image, rather than the image giving me the experience. When artwork is finished I sit with it and listen to what it has to tell me about what I was investigating in the piece, I always learn and then write. This image is very expressive of the endless images, words, and thoughts running through our heads.
Astounding image Bonnie. I love the gestural qualities which surface in your work. Remarkable. Your process is amazing.
very lyrical...very now
Love your image(s) Bonnie. I like the depth behind your work.
The idea that the different elements in this picture as new trains of thoughts is an interesting concept. The use of color is amazing I love the yellow on the top right and the deep contrast of the black over it.
I am intrigued by the way you use the process as a way to make sense of the world, and have almost a map of it ,, and turns out to be, along with it an amazing print! I think it was you who had your prints in the showcase outside the gallery last semester or last year.. I would make frequent trips downstairs to press my face against the glass and try to study how you made these phenomenal things! and the colors!!!
